The Maritime and Coastguard Agency, a full time partner in the Aberdeenshire Safety Partnership Steering Group, in association with the Garioch and North Marr Community Safety Group and Westhill Pool Lifeguards and Management, provided Primary 7 children from Crombie, Westhill, Elrick and Skene schools; the opportunity to learn about water and Coastal safety.

The children visited the pool during school time and were given a 10-15 minute talk, video and practical demo by the Coastguard followed by practical hands on safety lessons in the pool by the Lifeguards. Each session lasted for two hours.

A total of 186 children attended over four days.

Topics covered by the Coastguard were:
  • Coastguard Sea Smart Safety Code
  • Spot the dangers on the beach
  • Airbeds are dangerous
  • How to contact the Coastguard on 999
  • Harbours and river dangers
  • Fast flowing water
  • Rocks and cliffs
  • Cold water/hot weather
  • Safety aids - lifejackets etc.
The Lifeguards covered:
  • Self Rescue; swimming in clothes & treading water.
  • Rescue of a person in the water from the shore.
  • Throw, reach etc.
It is planned that this initiative, backed by the Garioch and North Marr Community Safety Group, will continue at other Schools and Pools in the Garioch and North Marr Community Area. They are currently planning similar water-safety courses for P7 children in Alford schools.
