COMMUNITY CONSULTATION

In addition to the audit the Community Safety Partnership submitted a selection of questions on community safety to the Aberdeenshire wide Citizens Panel. The survey had three main objectives looking at people’s views and attitudes towards:

  • Community Safety
  • Policing
  • Transport and Health

The panel on our behalf conducted surveys both electronically and by post. A total of 628 questionnaires were returned representing a 75% response rate.

Community Safety Concerns

When asked to highlight their community safety priorities in Aberdeenshire, the following were listed in order of importance by the respondents:

  • Drug Misuse
  • Violence/assaults
  • Theft by Housebreaking
  • Road Safety
  • Graffiti/Vandalism
  • Teenagers causing a nuisance
  • Sexual Assault/Rape
  • Threatening behaviour
  • Alcohol Misuse
  • Car Crime
Community Beat Officer

When asked what community safety priorities they would like to see adopted in their area. The most requested resource was "more police patrolling on foot" followed by "more facilities for young people". Aberdeenshire residents also wanted to see more campaigns regarding drugs and alcohol. As well as high profile policing residents wanted to see CCTV systems and community wardens in their areas.

Community Wardens

Of course perception of crime is as important as actual reported crime and when the respondents were asked to what extent they thought levels of crime had changed in Aberdeenshire we found that 38% of residents thought crime had increased. Whereas the Community Safety Audit for the years 2001-2003 indicates that there has been an 8.6% decrease in reported crimes in Aberdeenshire.

The Partnership's 2005 – 2008 strategy recognises the public concern about crime and safety and it is committed to responding to these very real issues throughout Aberdeenshire.
