Councillor Brian Topping of the Fraserburgh and District Community Safety Group has urged householders to display clear door numbers to help emergency services save valuable time and lives.

The initiative (sometimes called "Is Your Number Up?") aims to highlight the importance of visible house numbers or names. Councillor Topping says:

"If one of the emergency services or a doctor are called out to a house but have to spend time tracing it because it does not have a door number, it can add seconds or even minutes to their response time and it could cost lives."

All the emergency services and doctor's surgeries in Fraserburgh & District were contacted and they have given their backing to the project.

Councillor Topping also stressed that people living in rural areas should make sure that their homes are easy to find in an emergency. If you live up a narrow road or track, then have your house name at the end of the road.

Measures to improve the visibility of house numbers on council housing throughout the area has begun. As part of the "Is Your Number Up" campaign promoted through Fraserburgh and District Community Safety Group and done in conjunction with the council, Aberdeenshire Council workmen have started painting larger numbers on the front of council houses locally. In the case of harled houses, new brackets will be fitted next to the front door and numbers attached.

The work has been welcomed by Fraserburgh West Councillor, Brian Topping, who gave his support and backing in a bid to get the work done.

Councillor Topping explained that the work will be done over a three year period following approval by the council's Social Work and Housing Committee.
