All seven of the Aberdeenshire Community Safety Groups have written to retailers who hold firework sales licences in their area asking that fireworks should not be sold to anyone under 21 and that they should only be available in the three weeks before Guy Fawkes night.

For example, the Kincardine & Mearns Community Safety Group is, with the backing of Aberdeenshire Council's Trading Standards Department, sending letters to local businesses in the Mearns area calling on shopkeepers to voluntarily impose restrictions on the sale of fireworks in the run-up to November 5.

Kevin Hutchens, Chairman of the Kincardine & Mearns Community Safety Group is demanding that fireworks should not be sold to anyone under 21 and that they should only be available in the three weeks before Guy Fawkes night.

Kevin Hutchens said:
"The suggested measures combined with the promotion of professionally organised events, could help reduce vandalism and the number of accidents involving fireworks."

"It is my hope that local businesses will make a responsible and positive response to this appeal."

Another example of the promotion of firework safety is the Fraserburgh & District Community Safety Group which has organised a firework safety poster competition for primary school children.
