A number of Aberdeenshire bars promoting good practice in the industry have received awards at the 2009 "Best Bar None" Awards.

On Wednesday, February 11, 2009, the Aberdeenshire "Best Bar None" scheme held its annual awards ceremony to celebrate this years winners.

"Best Bar None" is an awards scheme for licensed premises, and is running in 80 locations all across the UK. The scheme allows licensed premise to demonstrate to official agencies just how well they manage their own business.

Aberdeenshire has been involved with the scheme since 2007.

The scheme is designed to promote and maintain an inclusive national awards scheme for all licensed premises across Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

"Best Bar None" works towards raising standards and rewards excellence for those venues that attain the award standard. This is delivered at a local level by active partnership between the industry, local authorities and the police.

The awards are based on core standards with local flexibility to ensure they address local needs.

Eleven establishments from across Aberdeenshire received awards for the work they have done over the last year to improve standards and customer experience. They were awarded five Gold awards, two Silver awards and four Accredited awards at the ceremony, which took place at the Holiday Inn Aberdeen West. Aberdeenshire Council Provost Bill Howaston presented the awards at the ceremony.

"Developing a scheme such as this one is extremely important to help tackle the issues surrounding alcohol abuse and alcohol related crime.

"I am thrilled to award the eleven winners this year for all their hard work in helping to raises standards across Aberdeenshire.

"I hope that these winners will inspire more licensed premises to take part in next years awards and help to make a difference throughout Aberdeenshire."

Kate Rigby, Strategic Development Officer (Community Safety) for Aberdeenshire, said:

"There are schemes such as the Aberdeenshire one all across the country, all with the aim of raising standards and reducing not only alcohol related crime but all problems that stem from over indulgence in alcohol.

"This is Aberdeenshire's second year being involved in the scheme, and the Aberdeenshire Community Safety Partnership hope to see over the next couple of years exactly how effective the scheme has been in reducing alcohol related incidents."

The Aberdeenshire scheme is supported by Aberdeenshire Community Safety Partnership, the Scottish Business Crime Centre and is sponsored by Diageo.

The Best Bar None scheme has a number of aims, including:

  • Reducing the risk of alcohol related harm, disorder and crime.
